In a move aimed at bolstering the capabilities of the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), Minister Dr Blade Nzimande has announced plans to appoint three additional members to the agency’s board. Interested individuals and organizations are invited to nominate suitable candidates for consideration.
The TIA, operating under the Department of Science and Innovation, plays a vital role in bridging the gap between research and development across various sectors. It acts as a catalyst for innovation, facilitating the commercialization of technology innovations from higher education institutions, science councils, and both the public and private sectors.
Currently comprising seven members, including the chairperson, the TIA board is set to expand to a maximum of 10 members. The additional members will serve alongside the chairperson and the CEO of the agency, who holds an ex-officio position.
According to a recent statement, Minister Nzimande emphasized the importance of appointing individuals with diverse expertise to the board. Prospective members should possess skills and experience in financial management, early-stage and venture capital investment, higher education and research, innovation and technology, legal matters including intellectual property, and corporate governance. Moreover, nominees are expected to have a proven track record in corporate or private sector institutions, ideally comparable in stature to the TIA.
The selected candidates will serve part-time for the remainder of the current board’s term, ending on 31 October 2025. Remuneration for board members will adhere to guidelines set forth by the National Treasury.
Nominations should be submitted via email to Mamaponesa.nepfumbada@dst.gov.za no later than 30 April. Each nomination must include a detailed curriculum vitae, including essential personal information, qualifications, relevant experience, and contact details of at least two referees. Confirmation of nominee availability is also required.
