In a significant stride toward embracing the digital era, two schools in the Northern Cape province of South Africa have become the pioneers of the .za schools digitization project.

Spearheaded by the .ZA Domain Name Authority (.zadna), this initiative marks a pivotal moment in bridging the digital gap and ushering in a new era of digital education.

The project’s inauguration took place on May 7th at the Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa (USAASA) broadband event, amidst anticipation and enthusiasm from education stakeholders. These schools, situated in the Pixley ka Seme District, signify the commencement of a transformative journey towards comprehensive digital education.

Molehe Wesi, the Chief Executive Officer of .zadna, articulated the vision behind the initiative, emphasizing the importance of empowering learners to cultivate their digital presence. By leveraging domain names as educational platforms, the project aims to equip students with essential digital skills crucial for their future endeavors.

The .za schools digitization project offers a holistic e-learning solution to public schools across South Africa. This includes providing .za domain names, developing school websites, implementing an interactive e-learning platform, and allocating .za email addresses to educators and students. Previously launched in the Free State province, the project’s expansion into the Pixley ka Seme District marks the beginning of its second phase. Internet access for these schools is facilitated through the SA Connect programme, ensuring connectivity essential for effective digital learning experiences.
