Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer known for its innovative approach to adventure gear, has officially launched its reimagined “travel kitchen.” This new accessory, priced at $1,400, is a streamlined version of a previously showcased camp kitchen prototype. The launch reflects Rivian’s commitment to enhancing the outdoor experience for its customers while expanding its accessory lineup.
Evolution from Prototype to Production
The original Rivian camp kitchen, unveiled as a prototype at the 2019 Overland Expo West, generated significant excitement among outdoor enthusiasts. The prototype was designed to integrate into the R1T pickup truck’s gear tunnel, providing a high-end, fully equipped kitchen setup. However, despite the initial buzz, Rivian never brought the camp kitchen to market.
Now, five years later, Rivian has introduced a more compact and affordable version, dubbed the “travel kitchen.” This new iteration addresses the previous model’s size and cost issues, offering a more accessible and versatile solution for outdoor cooking.
Key Features of the New Travel Kitchen
The travel kitchen features several notable upgrades and changes from its predecessor
- Compact Design: Unlike the bulky original prototype, the travel kitchen is designed to be portable and easy to use. It folds up for convenient storage and can be moved from the vehicle’s frunk or gear tunnel to the tailgate for use.
- Two-Burner Induction Cooktop: The travel kitchen includes a two-burner induction cooktop, optimized to deliver a combined 1,500 watts of power. It can be powered by Rivian’s R1 vehicles or any 120V power source with a 15A current.
- Food-Safe Prep Space: The kitchen features a food-safe prep area that remains level on tailgates, and it includes dimmable lights with retractable poles for evening cooking and creating memorable outdoor experiences.
- Sustainable Materials: True to Rivian’s eco-friendly brand ethos, the travel kitchen is made from castor plants, and the cutting board included is crafted from recycled materials.
Add-On Accessories
Rivian is also offering a range of add-on accessories to complement the travel kitchen. These include cookware, utensils, an apron, and a coffee grinder. For these items, Rivian has partnered with Snow Peak, a well-regarded outdoor gear company, to provide high-quality, purpose-built products.
The launch of the travel kitchen aligns with Rivian’s broader strategy to position itself as a brand synonymous with outdoor adventure and sustainable living. Earlier this year, the company also introduced a new “treehouse” rooftop tent equipped with a movie projector, further expanding its range of adventure-focused accessories.
The original camp kitchen prototype, priced at $5,000, included features such as a refillable water tank and required a specialized shuttle system for integration into the R1T’s gear tunnel. The updated travel kitchen is significantly less expensive and more user-friendly, making it a practical choice for a wider range of customers.
Rivian’s new travel kitchen is a significant step forward from its prototype, offering a more affordable and versatile solution for outdoor cooking. With its compact design, sustainable materials, and thoughtful features, the travel kitchen is set to enhance the camping experience for Rivian owners and outdoor enthusiasts alike. As Rivian continues to expand its accessory lineup, the travel kitchen represents a key part of the company’s strategy to blend adventure with innovation.
