Apple to Revamp Default App and Browser Settings in EU Amid Regulatory Pressures

In response to mounting regulatory pressure, Apple is set to implement significant changes for iPhone and iPad users in the European Union. Starting later this year, Apple will introduce a new ‘choice screen’ that allows users to select their default browser when they first open Safari. This choice screen will present a randomly ordered list of 12 browsers, simplifying the process for users to download and set their preferred option.

These forthcoming changes are part of Apple’s effort to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). The DMA, which aims to foster competition and provide users with more control over their digital experiences, has led to scrutiny of Apple’s initial compliance efforts. The European Commission had criticized Apple’s initial measures, prompting an investigation into whether they fully met the DMA’s requirements.

In addition to the browser selection feature, Apple will also introduce a dedicated section for users to set default apps for various functions such as messaging, phone calls, and password management. This move aims to give users greater flexibility in customizing their devices to better suit their needs.

Further reflecting the spirit of the DMA, Apple will now allow users to delete a broader range of pre-installed Apple apps. Previously non-removable apps like App Store, Messages, and Safari will be deletable, leaving only the Settings and Phone apps as non-deletable.

Apple has been actively engaged in discussions with the European Commission to ensure these updates align with regulatory expectations. The Commission will continue to monitor Apple’s compliance with the DMA and assess whether the new measures effectively meet the Act’s objectives.

This regulatory overhaul marks a significant shift in how Apple manages default app settings and app deletions, potentially setting a new precedent for the tech industry in the EU.
