The Port of Seattle and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport have reported a “possible cyberattack” affecting their systems. On Saturday morning, the Port of Seattle first announced disruptions on social media, revealing issues with their websites and phone systems. The airport soon followed with a statement about “certain system outages” suggesting a potential cyberattack.
By late Saturday, the airport was still facing significant outages. “There is not an estimated time for return and Port teams continue to work to restore full service,” the airport stated. Travelers are advised to use airline apps for boarding passes and bag tags and to allow extra time to reach their gates.
As of Sunday morning Pacific Time, a review of the Port of Seattle’s DNS records indicated that its public-facing web infrastructure remained largely offline.
A spokesperson from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) assured that security operations have not been affected. Earlier this year, the Biden Administration had introduced an executive order aimed at enhancing cybersecurity measures for ports.
This incident follows a recent global IT disruption caused by a CrowdStrike software update, which led to widespread flight cancellations and delays.
